It’s depressing to listen to the news. All they seem to talk about is how bad the economy is and how much worse they think it’s going to get. They continually trot out figures of GNP, unemployment, stock market totals, anything to emphasize their point. It’s times like these when there is definitely a surfeit of information, when ignorance would not only be bliss, but might actually make this debacle with the housing bust settle down like a boiling pot with oil throw on it.
It’s media hype to a certain extent. Yes, we are in trouble. Yes, Americans need debt relief, and it’s pretty obvious that we don’t need what Mr. Bush, Mr. Bernanke and the Fed’s solutions. Nothing they’ve tried so far is helping the economy. But all this wailing and gnashing of teeth isn’t getting us out of the fire.
I believe it’s because we are not encouraged to save, but to get more credit and spend, spend, spend. The so-called "economic stimulus plan" rebate that we are to get in a couple of months is probably NOT going to be spent on goods and services, but rather spent on bills. And, the more we concentrate on how bad it is, the worse it gets. Optimism generates positive thinking and positive action.
Somebody needs to get the marching band going and find something positive to talk up — something that will turn our minds away from trouble and drum up some innovative thinking. We need a rousing tune to get us marching down the road to economic recovery and a jazz band to lighten our steps along the way.
