If you’re in the US, you know that income tax time is just around the corner. We usually get a bit back on ours, so usually file as soon as our W2′s and 1099′s are in, but this year I guess we will delay filing until we see what the new President is going to order about taxes. I don’t want to file only to have to put in an amended return later because of some change.

I was talking with Mom about that Monday during our weekly phone conversation and she warned me not to wait too long as she was afraid the government would run out of money and not be able to pay tax refunds.

I don’t really think that will happen to be honest.

I’ve been known to be wrong, though :-?

This year I guess our refund will have to go towards car insurance. Ken and I usually split it and pay off a bill and use his bonus to pay car insurance with, but he’s not sure he’ll even GET a bonus this year much less that it will be enough to pay the car insurance with, so we’ll have to make other arrangements to get that paid.

I’m just still very thankful that we both have jobs and that we’ve paid off or down a lot of our debt over this past year so we are in fairly good shape financially. We won’t be able to go on any cruises or fancy vacations, but that’s OK. We will probably not attend as many dog shows either.

I’ve also been looking at tax preparation software. Last year I used Tax Act and struggled with it a bit. We’ve used Turbo Tax in the past and did OK with that. Ken wants to get a couple different ones and compare what they find for returns. I doubt there would be much difference, but there again, I’ve never compared tax preparation software although I think last year I did find a site that had reviewed the top 5 or 6 programs and rated them.

What are you doing this year about filing? Anything different from last year or are you like us and going to wait a bit? Which tax preparation software do you recommend?
