Image via WikipediaAlthough I admire Tiger Woods for his consistency and work ethics, I have to admit that it’s refreshing to see someone else taking the trophies these days. Not that I wish Mr. Woods ill, of course, but I’m also sure that his competitors were secretly relieved that he has to take the rest of this year off.
Whether Tiger would have been a factor or not, the Oakland Hills course was enough of one all by itself and at the halfway point saw one lonely player under par. Imagine a tournament as significant as this one ending in an over par score! But in true championship fashion, Padraig Harrington drove the final putt in to win the PGA Championship on “The Monster” course at Oakland Hills, MI with a 4 under par 66. He becomes only the fourth player to win back-to-back British Open and PGA in the same year.
Harrington has struggled over the last two years, but this year seems to be all his as he’s won the last 3 major tournaments and secured himself a spot in the Hall of Fame by doing so. He’s got his sights set on the Ryder Cup now and will pair up with Sergio Garcia who is struggling this year.
Titleist golf sponsors some of the most thrilling golfers of the year with such players as Tiger Woods and one can’t help but wonder with their strongest player out who they will tap to carry on the Titleist brand. Perhaps they’ll try to pick up Harrington now that he’s won 3 majors.
Some are saying Harrington is filling Tiger’s shoes. Do you think so? Do you think Sergio Garcia can overcome his failure to clinch to ever win a major, or is he the next Greg Norman? Do you think Tiger’s knee injury is going to have a permanent effect on his game?
