Do you ever look at Craigslist for stuff? I do — even jobs (that’s how I found one of my part time jobs). Anyway, I go there to look for different things — I look for people trying to place Whippets since I do Whippet Rescue. I also look for birds since all my birds are rescues as well and I have room for one more.
The other day I saw an ad for an African Grey parrot that the owner said she needed to rehome as they were being transferred back to England and couldn’t take the bird with them. I responded to the ad asking questions about the bird (age, sex, health, etc) and she responded back with that information and asked where I was located.
I provided a general area, not my specific address as I like to at least talk to people on the telephone before I do that.
She asked again where was I located and I replied with my phone number and asked her to give me a call to talk the bird over and other things. Well, the next thing I get is this quasi-invoice from some Yousuf Leonard in Akwa Cameroon wanting $100 for shipping the bird from Greensboro, NC to me in SC.
No way in he!! am I sending $100 to somebody in Cameroon. Now maybe — I say MAYBE if they had asked me to send it via Paypal or authorize.net I MIGHT have considered it for 10 seconds or so, but there ain’t no way this chick is sending money out of the good ol’ USofA for a bird that I can drive a few hours to pick up.
People, wise up here — I was born at night, but it wasn’t LAST NIGHT. I get enough of this kind of crap in the spam folder without catching it on Craigslist for crying out loud!
None of my rich uncles live in Nigeria — actually, they’re all in the poor house right now. Yahoo! doesn’t have a lottery and if they did, I didn’t enter it. Same goes for the Great Britain Lottery — didn’t enter, so couldn’t have won it.
Now if any of you want to send me money, hey! I would appreciate it greatly and many thanks in advance! Not too proud to take any amount and you can write it off on your taxes as a donation to either Whippet rescue or homeless birds.

Yeah, it’s funny how dumb some people take other people for. I remember calling someone off craig’s list once for an apartment viewing and she said to call back at 11:30. I called at 11:35. Then she told me to call back at 11:25. WHA?? I never bothered to call back after that!
p.s. I know my story isn’t about someone thinking I’m a fool… but it’s still funny (weird, not haha)
Omg… I can’t believe what people can think up to lure people. I bet there are some that pays that bill and buys it. :/
@fragile — there is no doubt that Craigslist has it’s fair share of kooks, crooks and loonies, but it’s a terrific resource, so we just have to go into it prepared for what life throws us.
@Øyvind — I’m sure there ARE people who have fallen for it! That’s why they keep on trying!

I’ve got a couple of things for sale on a site like Craigslist. It is crazy how many stupid questions people ask. But what has me laughing are the ones who wrote to ask if it was still available right after I posted the ad. Why can’t any of them write in complete sentences either? Or use punctuation and capital letters. I’m expecting a drooling idiot to come pick up my table tomorrow, I just hope they remember to bring money. In all their emails they talk about picking it up, not paying for it.
@Laura — well, did they show up and if they did, was it with cash in hand? Inquiring minds (nosy nellies) want to know
