Even On The Information Highway Rubberneckers Abound

Posted By ê¿ê on May 6th, 2009

Nikki Catsouras' wrecked PorscheThe hot topic this evening (5/6/09) isn’t Cinco de Mayo, but rather a rehash of some grisly photos of a tragic accident that happened nearly three years ago.

Nikki Catsouras was nearly decapitated when she rammed her fathers’ Porche 911 into a tollbooth. It was October 31st, 2006 and even today her family is haunted — no STALKED by the photos that were posted to the web of her mangled and torn body.

WORSE, during the weeks following the accident, Nikki’s family received harassing emails with the photos attached containing inflammatory messages and someone set up a fake MySpace page in Nikki’s name that showed the photos and engendered comments like “What a waste of a Porsche” and “The spoiled rich girl got what she deserved”

The release of the photos was subsequently traced to two California Highway Patrol dispatchers who received 25 days suspension each for the transgression on the family’s privacy.

In response to the now viral photos, the family has begun a “Remembering Nikki” campaign that shows photos of Nikki as a pretty, vibrant young lady.

It seems now that when a search is done for the photos, a Russian site comes up first in the search engines that is loaded with Trojans and viruses, so hopefully the Information Highway Rubbernecking Party will soon come to an end.

What do you think about the two dispatchers who released the photos to the web?

Was 25 days suspension enough punishment, or did they deserve punishment at all?

Does CHP bear any responsibility for the family’s suffering because of this?

If you were in a position to post (or sell) revealing or titllating photos of someone would you do it?

I’ve read about this and was seriously disgusted. At this point, I don’t know what law was broken. I couldn’t speak to that.

Perhaps the CHP should issue an apology – but that isn’t going to assist the family at all.

I read the other kids can’t get on the internet because of fear of seeing their sister’s photos. It just makes me so ill.

I don’t think anything other than getting rid of those photos is going to assist the family.

    :(

Monica — CHP did issue an apology to the family who actually sued them in court. They lost the case, but it’s on appeal. The problem is the photos won’t go away. People who are exploiting them are getting too much traffic and obviously have no human compassion for the family’s emotions to come into play and get them to take them down voluntarily. At least in my search (limited as it was) last night, I didn’t come across the really graphic photos.

Unfortunately, something will come along that will eventually take the place in the search engine results other than horrifying photos of someone who died in a tragic manner.

The Internet can be such a strange and bizzare place at at times. I can only assume that people with a third grade education with absolutely no taste or upbring are responsible for such a heinous activity. I’m rather certain that crazies out there will insure that these photos won’t ever fade, unfortueatly. Such a sad and terrible waste of Technology.
