Now guys don’t go getting all silly on me here…as Carly Simon says, “you probably think this post is about you don’t you?” but it’s not about you or your dangly bits either. I’m quite sure you all are adequate in that department for your partner at least. (fingers crossed here )
No, this is about post length.
I subscribe to a nifty little newsletter called Site Pro News and today’s (or maybe it was yesterday’s) article is titled “20 Best Blog Post Ideas”. Since I’ve personally been a bit on the dry side these last few days (and I never thought I would be writing THAT let me tell you!), I dove in to see just what the 20 ideas were all about.
The second paragraph says:
The primary thing to remember is that blog posts don’t have to be long and complicated. You’re not writing an article, a report or a thesis. Many times a blog post is only a paragraph consisting of a few sentences that contain your thoughts about something. Now, doesn’t that sound easier than composing a 600-word post each time you sit down to blog?
My eyebrows flew up in surprise let me tell you!
You see, my brain works like automotive performance parts – you just expect them to outperform regular parts, right? So it’s been a loooong time since I wrote a blog post that was LESS than 600 words! And I don’t feel at all like I’m writing a report or thesis, but sometimes think of my posts as articles especially when I’m passing along some of my more apropos knowledge on a specific subject.
But it’s not truly about ME now is it? Its about YOU my readers.
So my question to you guys …am I too verbose in my posts? Do I yammer on long after your interest in the subject has waned?
Ok — it’s killing me, but I’ve managed to leave this one at barely over 300 words, so was it long enough for you darling?
Or did I leave you wanting?

I think it all depends on the quality of the content. I have read articles in excess of 1000 words that just felt too short, because they were so interesting. Unfortunately one does find articles that are only about 100 words long but still they are too long.

It depends on the author and his or her writing style. My posts are always between 800-1200 words. I don’t think I’m losing readers because I am so verbose, but I do edit myself quite heavily so I think it’s mostly lean meat in those posts.
Like Lyndi, I’ve read other posts that feel just too short and some that are extremely long winded and would do best to get directly to the point.
I still prefer to read a post that is longer than a few paragraphs but shorter than a Wall Street Journal expose.
