Playgrounds for Dogs

The community that I live in is creating dog parks in several locations throughout the county and have asked the Greenville Kennel Club for help in planning the parks.
They specifically wanted people who knew about or did agility with their dogs. I think they’re trying to plan for more than just the open spaces that most dog parks are comprised of.That’s an exciting concept and shows the county planners involved are more into dogs than I thought they were.
I can envision swing sets and jungle gyms designed for dogs set in various corners of the park. They’ll have to build different sizes since a big dog would not be comfortable on a structure built for a small dog and vice-versa. Climbing and sliding are things dogs enjoy doing just as much as children do. I hope they also plan a pond or pool for the dogs to swim in and cool off in. I think a park like that would be great fun for dogs.
Although I’m familiar with the sport of agility, and have trained a dog or two on agility equipment, I’ve never participated in a trial nor have I titled a dog in agility. I would love to be involved in this project, but wonder if they would consider me qualified enough.
Do you have dog parks in your area?
Is there equipment for the dogs to play on in it? Do you think such equipment would be used by the dogs who visit the park?
In light of the poisonings at a dog park in Toronto, Canada, do you think dog parks are in general safe places to take your dog?

You guys are so lucky to be thinking about parks for dogs… In India, we would be lucky if we had enough spaces for all our children to play in

Khurshed — yes, I do realize that we are very lucky in that respect. We have playgrounds for children also, so the dogs aren’t getting something the kids don’t already have.

I wish that they would think bigger for dogs. I’ll be moving to Greenville from the Chicago suburb area and have already found the thought hard as a good part of my time is spent at the local County Forest Preserves with my dog. We have about 10 dog parks in out county and each of the dog parks is at least 20 acres. There are no swing sets or slides or silly things like that. Its just room for a dog to run and sniff and explore. They are the most amazing places both for dog and owner and its just such great exercise for us both to walk around the park once or twice. The parks I’m seeing in Greenville are these little patches of play area that are totally focussed on dogs playing with each other. My dog loves interacting with other, but we’re runners/walkers and need room to go. I love being able to run with him and not having to leash him. That would be phenominal to actually see Greenville county put in some good sized dog parks meant for exercise for both pet and owner.
