Making Baby

Posted By ê¿ê on August 30th, 2008

No, this post isn’t going to be about sex.

Sorry to disappoint, but I thought that in all fairness I should get that disclaimer out right away. I wouldn’t want any of you to be reading this under false pretenses and then feel cheated somehow when you got to the end and realized there was no spicy, juicy much less explicit anything.

No, this is just another rant from me, your favorite dog-loving, people-hating curmudgeon.

So, if it’s not about sex then just what am I ranting about today you might ask (since you’ve read this far, I guess you’re down for the couBulldog in PJsnt so I might as well make this good).

It’s about stupid, ignoramuses who put clothes on their dogs.

I’m not talking about the occasional Halloween costume, or once-in-a-blue-moon photo shoot either. I’m talking about the nutcases who think the dog is NAKED if it’s not wearing the latest in doggy dressups. This phenomenon has become so prevalent that there is now an entire freaking DEPARTMENT IN PETSMART for doggie apparel!!!!!!

Now I can confess to hitting up the thrift store for used baby clothes to dress the dog up for a costume contest or I even once upon a time had this brainstorm for a relay race game to play at a party where you had to race to a pile of clothes in the floor, dress your dog in a top and a bottom, then race back to the finish line with the clothes intact on the dog. You were not allowed to pick the dog up either, it had to make it back on all 4 paws and it’s own steam. That was hilarious fun and I’ll have to trot it out again at the next dog party I organize.

I’ll even confess to putting t-shirts on the Cresteds (the hairless ones, not the puffs) in cooler weather and of course the Whippets have their coats to wear outdoors when the weather turns frosty. THAT is not the type clothing of  which this rant is all about. No, it’s the dresses, jogging outfits and pajamas that are made just for dogs that I’m referring to and the nutty owners who insist on Fido wearing these fashions every day, day-in-day-out. It’s like the dog is now some kind of dress-up baby doll or something.

People PULEEZE! Dogs are DOGS and most of them come with perfectly adequate coverings made of hair called FUR. These covertings are perfect for all weather conditions and social occasions, trust me.

I totally agree. It’s one thing to keep a short haired dog warm when it’s cold out (we put coats on the blood donor greyhounds here too), but it’s another to dress it up like a child. Vets aren’t wanting to undress their patients, and they don’t want to cut it out of a handbag either.

Well Hi Dr. Ferox! Haven’t seen you in awhile! Well, you’ve read what I think of the clothing, but the handbag thing –well, it might be easier to cut one out of a handbag than it can be to get some of those teeny crates opened  Thankfully they don’t make those large enough for a Whippet, so you’ll only see little dogs (10lbs or under) in them.

I also agree with your post!!! Bailey would rip anything off of him if I ever dressed him in some piece of clothing. The only thing he wears is a bandanna the groomer puts on him when they groom him. Once I thought about making him some rain “boots” so that when we go out when it’s raining his feet won’t get soaked. But then I had second thoughts and said “Whatttttttttt was I thinking?? he’s a dog for God’s sakes” Also when he goes out to pee, he always steps in it not once but twice or so. Then when we’re back in the house and i pick him up, the smell on his feet about knocks me to the floor.

If I looked as good in fur as my dog does, that’s all I would wear too.

I don’t dress up my dogs like babies, but they do have a wide variety of t-shirts and such.

Our vet told us when they were born that they needed to be bundled up whenever they go outside in the cold so that’s what we do for the winter months. However, they enjoy it. To them it’s just like wearing a collar.

However, I do agree that overdressing them with frilly things like they are babies is pretty ridiculous. lol.

Oddly, my Doberman LOVES playing dress-up. He prances around like a little fairy, and more than once I’ve been told, “Um, I think your dog is gay.” Of course I don’t dress him like like a human, but he loves it when I put his safety green vest on him when we go camping. He feels so special, and he wants everyone to see how pretty he is with his vest on.

But yeah, I agree… I have no issue with people (like myself) who put clothing on their pets for protection from the elements or function, or for that matter an occasional cute t-shirt or outfit. It’s when people get a little “confused” about pets being animals who lick their butts, eat poo, and roll in dead things… c’mon folks - at the end of the day, Fluffy IS JUST a dog!

“No, this is just another rant from me, your favorite dog-loving, people-hating curmudgeon.” LOL.. hey that is me too!

Actually, the only dog I dress up is Tatum. And not fancy schmancy stuff, but she has a cute pink coat to keep her warm in the winter, and a pink collar and pink leash to match. And I even have a pink tank top that matches! EEEKKKkk! First dog I ever did this with. Never dressed up a dog.. except when I was a kid and dressed up my lab mix, Jackie, a little bit. but hey, I was a kid!

Otherwise I agree, I’m also not crazy about dressing dogs up. Except it’s kinda fun on Halloween!
