While I was strapped in the dentists chair yesterday, they thoughtfully had Oprah on for my viewing pleasure.
I’m telling you, she has some of the dumbest people on her show.
Yesterday’s show was a makeover show. She had these 3 fashion consultants who worked with all these women to update their wardrobes showing appropriate outfits for age groups of 30, 40, and 60. While the women’s wardrobes were in definite need of updating, these so-called (and probably self-proclaimed) fashion consultants just made most of them look really stupid.
And I can’t believe Oprah allowed these fashion consultants to degrade these women the way they did! One of them said “And so-and-so only had ONE bra in her wardrobe and that was a sports bra!” Then she went on to say “so we got her fitted in a new bra and now her “girls” really stand up!” — whaaaatt??? GIRLS ??? Excuse me, but they are BREASTS. To top it off, she then had the lady (who looked ready to crawl under the floor in embarrassment) turn around so she could show the audience her “booty”. And Oprah is echoing these terms! How humiliating for the women on display! I’m quite sure they never would have bought into this makeover if they had known they were going to be paraded in front of the masses and have their body parts referred to in such degrading manner. I sure hope their new wardrobes (there was only one outfit out of all of the ones shown that I even remotely liked) was worth the humiliation.
Anyone else out there feel that calling a woman’s breasts “girls” and her rear-end her “booty” is degrading?
Anyone else feel that Oprah is a two-faced promoter of herself? She talks women’s rights and giving respect for women, then allows these “consultants” to refer to her guests in this fashion AND REPEATS THE TERMS!
Am I the only one who takes exception?
Guess I’m weird.

i don’t have “girls” and would be mortified to have my breasts referred to as that on national tv. i really need a makeover but not at that cost.

I do not watch Oprah personally but my wife does. She has similar views on these things as you have expressed here and she would have said something had she seen the episode you are refering to. We live in South Africa and I think we only get to see the episodes a while later. Thanks for the warning, I now know that the wife will be complaining about Oprah pretty soon.
I have had a look around your site and I must say you have impressed me with the variety of topics you cover. Keep up the good work, we all need more interesting reads like this one. In that famous Californian’s words - I will be back.

wished i had the opportunity to watch. i am an oprah fan but taking the incidences on her show in this post made me wonder what happened to her. i had this to share that those volunteers should have expected the worst. in any situation, that should be the case.

You are NOT weird, and I commend you on taking a stand against this trashy talk and behavior! Personally, I am ashamed that so many women have lowered themselves to ‘fit in’. That goes for big ol’ tatoos on their behinds that they can show off when their low-rise jeans show the crack of their butts and their thongs. A lot of this started with gangs and has now gotten into the mainstream of society. My breasts are breasts, and my butt is my butt. I haven’t watched Oprah for years because she allows, and promotes this kind of crap. Good for you for speaking out against it.

My mom and I were just talking about our intense dislike for all things Oprah yesterday. I also have a good friend who is vehemently anti-Oprah. Sounds like she humiliated some women. What happened to positive body image and respect for your body?

I’ve watch Oprah when there are no other things to watch and thought, why is America taking this BS? But then again, she regains the cool factor when she gives cars away. hehehe

I used to like the show some years ago. I have not really watched since but if that’s what she is allowing to be said on her show then I am not interested in it at all. One of the reasons why I never wanted to be on any reality TV is because of just such things.
Frankly, I feel sorry for her and I’m praying for her.

I haven’t seen anything other than excerpts of the show. It hasn’t been on in the UK for a long time. That incident does sound degrading and it’s an example of exactly the reason I would think several times before appearing on television at all. I know a few people who have, on respectable documentaries, and the producers will do anything to make a “better” show.

I rarely watch the Oprah show, and I hope I won’t see this episode. Her show is a hit or miss, but these days I find that she’s getting too full of herself.
