Feeble Attempts at Digital Art
Posted By ê¿ê on October 5th, 2008
I realize that by showing you all these, that I’m exhibiting what CLA (complete lack of authority) on the subject of creating digital art I have.
But, that’s not going to stop my showing you what I’ve done, so click off now or keep on — it’s your choice but don’t say you weren’t warned.
I use Corel Paint Shop Pro XI to create my images. It’s a very user-friendly program that has tons of cool things about it that make it pretty easy for the non-artist (as you may decide I am) create some pretty interesting images. It uses brushes and filters that PhotoShop also uses, you just have to convert the brushes, but that’s pretty easy to do. These images were all created with the pen, brush and some of the preset shapes tools. I used some custom made gradients (those are easy to make, too) and that’s about it. I also took advantage of the art media layers to create this guy and had it set to pastels. When I actually DREW stuff by hand, I often used pastels and watercolors. While using these layers isn’t anything like DRAWING with pastels, the end product is very similar.

I’m toying with the idea of creating a graphics blog called the Blue Whippet and this guy will be my mascot. He’s not a great Whippet — topline is too flat and one of those cheeks looks funky, but for a first effort, I’m not too unhappy with him. And, unlike an art project, I can go back to my raw file of this and tweak stuff that needs fixing — like that back leg!

To go with him, I have this 125×125 for either an Entrecard widget or an ad and then a header image as well.

Now these two were created with preset shapes and of course fonts. I also used a filter to create the white streaky halo behind the writing on the header.
I will probably not leave that turquoise background behind the drawing — that was left as a contrast layer and I forgot to remove it before saving the image as a jpg. I still have the psp image which has the layers intact, so I can remove that and use just the painted image.
So what do you think? Do I have a future?

I think it came out great! Especially the soulful whippet eyes. And I really like the Entrecard graphic you made, too.

I think you’re great with this stuff - but I would, wouldn’t I?
And, if you’re slightly unhappy with the image you can go back and ‘whippet’ into shape
… oh, please yourself.

@Øyvind — thanks! I appreciate your support more than you know.
@Tom — Oh, don’t worry — it would take some pretty harsh criticism to keep me from creating
@Daisy — Thanks, darlin’! I have to keep you away from the Whippets, though — they are very bad and like to chase kitties.
@Ken — yeah, guess you might be a tad prejudiced at that
And believe me, I will “whippet” good.
