Gosh everyone has done a post on Mother’s Day and/or Mother’s Day gifts including me, but when it comes down to the nitty gritty of actually BUYING one, my Mom is really HARD to buy for! She doesn’t have much room for things living in a one bedroom apartment like she does and most things she NEEDS she already has. Flowers are nice, but die too soon leaving only the memory and she’s diabetic, so candy is a no-no. My gift choice needs to be compact and since she likes gadgets, gadgetry would work well.

She’s in her eighties and although somewhat computer savvy, she’s no Bill Gates! She loves to play games, though and, like me (guess this nut didn’t fall too far from the tree!), she enjoys word games and card games. She also has some trouble sitting at a computer for any length of time, so my blazing streak of inspired thought (admittedly that only occurred after reading about this game) came that I could get her a Wii and the new Nintendo Game, Cross Words! Since the console can sit on a bookshelf or desk, she can hold the game piece in her hands like a book which will make it easy for her to sit in her recliner to play.

I found it at Buy.com which right now has what they call “free budget shipping” on select items. Since a Wii is compact and gadgety, and this game is one that has plenty of stuff that she would enjoy (besides crossword puzzles, there are wordsearch puzzles and anagrams), it’s struck me as the perfect gift! It has multiple levels of play, so there’s no reason for her to get frustrated with a too-hard puzzle (not that there is such a thing — she’s really good at that stuff!), but even if she does get stuck, the game has a hint button that will help her get the solutions.

What I found really cool is you just write the letters in the squares with a stylus — just like you were doing a paper puzzle, but unlike paper puzzles, if you make a mistake, you just write the new letter over top of the wrong one — no erasing! Well, Mom does her crosswords in pen, so there’s no erasing for her anyway.

Although it’s not scheduled to release until 5/6, I can pre-order it through Buy.com and have it shipped directly to her apartment, so it arrives in plenty of time for the big day.
