Things

I know that I don’t have the best memory in the world, but sometimes getting reminded of things is just…well…irritating (or you could insert your own descriptive here).

When it’s my husband, Ken reminding me of things, I often have to just grit my teeth and say “OK”. I try to smile while saying it, but it probably comes off as more a baring of teeth than a real smile.

Yesterday he forgot to turn off the coffee pot before he left for work (or so he thought). So he calls me at work all in a panic because he’s envisioning the house burning down and starts out by blessing me out for not having my cell phone on (at 5:30 in the morning why do I want my cell phone on???) then goes on to ask me to go back home to cut it off (an hour’s drive one way and to cut off the coffee pot that has a two hour cut off on it anyway?? Um, no I don’t think so…..). I tell him that I don’t have to go to that extreme; that I can call my neighbor and get her to do it for us. That reassures him somewhat and we hang up.

Well, I should be really good at futures trading, because I just KNEW I would get a follow-up call from him reminding me about performing that task and sure enough about 40 minutes later it came. Did I remember to call (yes). Was I able to get her (yes). Did she call back to say she’d done it (no).  Didn’t I ask her to call me back??!!?? (no). Why not!!! Wasn’t I concerned (insert guilt trip here)???

So, also true to my prediction of my response to such interrogation, I dutifully call said neighbor who reports that the coffee pot was indeed off and that the house was intact with absolutely no signs of fire or smoke damage. I return the call to Ken to pass along that report and he’s now relieved and able to once more function normally.

I guess all that just set the stage for further frustration at being reminded of something as the day wore on.

I use a program at work called Microsoft Great Plains (version 10 in case you’re wondering) which has this reminder program as part of it that will pop up and remind you of tasks you’ve set for yourself or to notify you when a critical stage has been met in some process or another.  One of the tasks it incessantly reminds you of is to complete some survey and no matter how often you complete said survey the da** thing pops up again the next time you open the program (not even the next DAY — the next TIME!).

So, being totally irritated at this point about REMINDERS, I search the web for a solution to turning this thing off for once and for all.

I almost weep with joy at finding Jivtesh’s blog about DynamicsGP which contains exactly the thing to relieve me of this irritating reminder!

Bonus is that his blog also contains other answers to stuff about Dynamics Great Plains that will help me do my job more efficiently, so I am in geek heaven.

Now, what were you going to remind me of??
