Max and his cast

I’ve talked off and on about my attempts to be a healthier person and thought you might be ready for an update. Since I had my annual physical earlier this week, the timing seemed appropriate.

And there is good news and bad news to report.

For the past 5 weeks, I’ve been unable to go to the gym and do my usual routine on the treadmill, strength machines and elliptical machine because of needing to get home to attend to the puppy with the broken leg who has to be confined while he’s in the cast. Since he has to be in said cast for 6 more weeks, I guess my exercise program is curtailed somewhat for that duration. I’m still doing some exercises but the routine is not as beneficial as working out at the gym is. Note to self: GET OUT AND WALK DUMMY!

But, according to the doctor, I’ve lost 8 pounds since I last saw her. My blood pressure is excellent for my age (124/82) and other than my arthritis, I don’t have much of anything to complain about. I last saw her in March for strep throat, so I’ve been very healthy!

The lab work shows that my cholesterol is elevated and according to the message she left on my answering machine yesterday (why can’t they call my cell?? I give them all the numbers to contact me with but they always choose the one where I’m not it seems. :?: ) I need to be on cholesterol medicine. I was on some once, but it made me feel weird so we’ll have to wait and see what this does.

Other things I’ve done to be healthier is to eliminate nearly all sodas (even diet!). I drink coffee, green tea, water and fruit juices limiting sodas to only those occasions when that’s the only thing available to drink. I use Splenda in anything that calls for sugar, limit my consumption of ketchup (which contains LOTS of sugar) and pretty much stick to a soup-and-salad lunch menu. We’re eating a lot of fish and chicken instead of red meat and I’m trying to stick to fresh vegetables or frozen instead of canned ones.  I find a lot of wonderful, low calorie recipes at Gina’s Weight Watchers Recipes that even Ken is enjoying (whether he knows it or not).

Something I NEED to do (especially since there’s a sale on it right now and who can resist a SALE??) is to order Debbie’s A Lean Healthier You. While it might not be the cure-all, it will definitely help me to reinforce my better habits.

I know it’s the holidays and food is of paramount importance during this time, making it really hard to stick to a diet. So, what are you doing to help keep those unwanted calories out of your mouth and off your hips? I’m open for suggestions to help me stay the course!

I am a little skinny thing. I can eat virtually anything without picking up the weight. I know this is not going to last forever. I might not have a weight problem but this does not mean that I am very healthy, I eat far too many fast foods and I do not get half enough exercise. I tend to get flu and such things very easily and I am sure this can all be blamed on the unhealthy diet and lack of exercise. I should also get myself into a strict regime and try to stick to it, the will power is just not there.

  2. I used to have a bad triglyceride level. Eat fats and drink sugars are my daily chores :)

    It’s getting better now.

About exercises, at least I walk to the office from home every day (15 mins) and also when I go to lunch (15 mins too) So a total of around 1 hour of walk per day :)
But besides that and a badminton session on Sunday, I pretty much spend my time sleeping and in front of the computer :(

Lyndi — I used to be skinny, too, but age and a sedentary job has put on the pounds. Now I’m struggling to take them off.

Michal — I remember when you had an article on your blog about your cholesterol level. I hope you’re continuing to get that down!

I started taking salsa lessons which is so much fun, and aside from my weekly gym routine of at least 3 x a week, I try to eat home cooked meals because I know what I am putting in them. Thanks so much for linking to my site.

At a time like this where you can find food in abundance, it is indeed a challenge to keep to a diet. What I would suggest is to chew your food well and eat slowly; since our brain gets the signal slower then we eat, we tend to eat more than it is enough to make us full. So chewing and eating slowly could possibly help us to cut down on the amount that we are eating. And what I would also do is to make sure I have a bigger portion of salad, vegetables and fruits to go with the meal.

@Gina — Oh!That does sound like fun and dancing definitely uses up LOTS of calories!

@BK — thanks for that tip. I am guilty of bolting my food which definitely enables you to pack more in :( , so I do need to make a conscious effort to slow down and chew longer (would help digestion to do that, too!).

Ah, I have no suggestion for you – your diet are very healthy to me already. Just like to know how you see those rawists eating things raw?
