Now, maybe it’s common knowledge, and maybe it doesn’t take anything as extensive as CDL training, but I had no idea that 4 wheel disc brakes would make a big difference in how a car drove and handled! I know I posted about my little car hugging the road during a rainstorm, but honestly thought that was as much to do with overall design and tires as anything.
The importance of 4 wheel disc brakes, however, was really brought home to me today.
Ken had to work today and we are entered in a little one day show in North Augusta, SC, so that means I got to make the hour and a half drive by myself with the two dogs. Ken didn’t want me taking the Crossover since two crates won’t fit in it (at least not two big enough for Whippets), so I drove his van; a 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan.
Now, I’m very familiar with the Caravan since it was my main drive before we go the Crossover, but I haven’t driven it since we got the Crossover in May.
I can’t believe what a major deal getting used to the feel of the Caravan was this morning from how the Crossover drives. Although I’ve been driving mini vans for the last 15 years, going back to a mini van from the sporty, quick and responsive Crossover was a shock!
And then I had to stop.
The other day, when a deer leaped out in front of the Crossover, I gave myself whiplash tromping on the brakes, but the little car went from 55 to 0 in 2 seconds flat and I missed the deer completely. Today in the Caravan, just stopping for a stop sign was a major deal! I felt like I was going to sail right through it! It was a very unsettling experience! Of course by the time I got to North Augusta, it didn’t feel quite so strange and I didn’t feel like I was driving a tank anymore but those first 20 miles or so was very odd.
Now I get to face trying to get my little car back from Ken, who I know is going to have fallen in love with it.
Maybe the fact that I handled his dog, Tigger to Best of Winners today will sweeten the deal….then again…
