Do you know someone who routinely volunteers for things?
It’s that ever-eager person who, when someone asks for a volunteer pops up their hand and says enthusiastically “Yes! I can do that!”
Anyone out there pointing a finger at me needs to temper that a bit.
I used to be that way, but in recent times (and I’m not going to give you a firm number for that either, so just hush — and you can quit rolling your eyes, too!
) I’ve tried to temper that nearly knee-jerk response by thinking through just how much time and resources said project might require from me BEFORE I raise my hand.
Because, as much as I enjoy helping others and doing things that keep me involved with my chosen hobbies, I DESPISE not getting the job done in the manner I think it should be done.
Which was why, when the unnamed Club had a certain person — let’s call that person “person X” on the slate of officers submitted by the nominating committee, I had someone nominate me for that position. History had already shown that this person was one who routinely volunteered for things only to do a half-assed job at it.
Well, my fellow club members evidently felt the same way because I got voted in.
But darn it! In the middle of the election process, Person X had themselves nominated in an unfilled position! And so Person X was voted in to that position (at which X had already shown how lackadaisically X would treat that position). So I STILL have to deal with person X on the board.
Person X is the secretary.
That’s a pretty intense position. Next to Treasurer, it’s probably the most important job in the club because it’s the hub through which everything flows.
I’m near to tearing my hair out because I can’t get a response from Person X and need things like the recent membership applications and the minutes from the meeting held in early April. When I see person X at functions we both attend, I gently remind person X that I need these things. Weeks have gone by with no documents. Things need to be done, but can’t be done without these documents.
Yes, person X can’t respond to my requests for these things, however person X CAN email me forwards of jokes, etc.
So, now dear readers, I need your help.
How can I motivate person X to do the things that are needed to be done by the position person X holds?
I know what I would LIKE to do, but it’s a small club and I don’t want to alienate members.
Nor do I want to get arrested (so no assault suggestions!).
Heeeeeeellllllllllllllllllllpppppppppppppp!
