Disaster!!!

As the database administrator for my company, I’m not usually too involved with the hardware end of our network, but occasionally, I”m called in on a problem that ends up being hardware related.
This was the case last night..
When the power goes out in our building, we have UPS (uninterruptible power supply) units installed for each server. These are essentially batteries adn like most batteries, over time, they lose their re-chargeability. Usually we are notified with this happens as these are “smart UPS” units that beep when their life gets short and when that happens we send them to a power supply repair shop to be refurbished, but again, like many things in life, things don’t always work exactly like you expect them to. Last night (of course just AFTER I had fallen into a deep sleep) I was called with the news that the power was out (line cut by construction next door) and call center could not access the web portal to do their work.
After an hour troubleshooting online, I decided that I was going to have to make the trek into the office to see what was going on. When I got there, I found that a faulty UPS had shut off one of my domain controllers and the backup was not working just right. Fortunately, we did have a backup UPS on hand, and were able to get the main controller back up and running, but now I am so sleep deprived, it’s not funny….
