I know I talk about my dogs pretty frequently, but hardly ever show you their photos. It’s not because I don’t take photos of them, because I do! So, today, I thought I would rectify that omission and introduce you to some of the Hounds of Kemar (our kennel name).

Mr. Tigger — he’s officially named Ableaim Kallikrates (his breeder wanted his name to start with a “k” and Kallikrates is an ancient Greek architect who, along with Ictinus designed the Temple of Athena). He’s called Tigger because as a puppy, he was the bounciest thing! Now that he’s grown up (he was two in January), he doesn’t bounce so much. He is about halfway completed with the requirements for an AKC Championship title and will then do some other stuff like racing or lure coursing.
His coloring is often referred to as orange brindle although it’s just a variation of fawn brindle. He’s a fun dog to live with although I did despair of him ever growing out of the puppy-destructo phase. He’s mostly a good dog now and his occasional lapses can be attributed to other dogs leading him astray.
Ms. Payne — no, this isn’t a Whippet! She’s a Chinese Crested in the powderpuff variety (which means she has a full coat of hair where the hairless only has hair on the head, tail and feet). Pooh is also two years old. Her birthday is a week before Tigger’s. In this photo, she’s stacked on our grooming table because I can never seem to get a good win photo of her. She’s also about halfway along to her AKC Championship.
Pooh’s official name is Zydeco Sheng Feng. Her breeder wanted all Chinese names for the litter. Sheng Feng means beautiful wind. Pooh’s coat looks lovely blowing in the wind! She’s full of character, and smart as a whip! I plan to do some Rally-O with her when she finishes her championshp.
Butterfly — well, her name origin is pretty obvious! Butterfly’s “real” name is Kemar’s Song of the South. She’s from a litter that we named for characters from Margaret Mitchell’s “Gone With The Wind“. Her sister, Maggie (Kemar’s Gone With The Wind) and her brother, Oscar (Kemar’s Best Picture) also live here. Other members of her litter are close by and doing all kinds of things like Therapy work, racing, lure coursing and two of them have their CGC titles and one has a Rally-O title! I guess you could say I’m pretty proud of this litter of Whippets.
This photo shows her going Best Bred-By Exhibitor in Show, which was a huge thrill for me and a really LONG day for her since she had to show four times in one day to get there! Two more points and Ms. Butterfly becomes Champion Kemar’s Song of the South.
This is Lance — Champion Brooklyn’s Sir Lance of Zydeco HL. He’s the hairless variety of Chinese Crested. He completed his Championship in a whirlwind fashion, winning all majors in 5 shows. He’s retired now and just living the life of a spoiled rotten dog.
They kind of look like a My Little Pony come to life, don’t they? I’ve found Cresteds to be smart, agile and athletic. I’ve seen them succeed on the agility field, in the obedience ring and of course, they excel at being lap dogs!
I’m sure you’re saying — but these are all show dogs! Surely you have some that are just hang-around-the-house dogs?? Yes, we have those aplenty! This is Bruno and Lottie. Bruno is a Whippet that was turned in to Whippet Rescue which Ken and I are volunteers for. Lottie is a retired Racing Greyhound that we adopted nearly 13 years ago — yes — she will be 15 in October.
Bruno left us a few months ago — he had mast cell cancer — we sure do miss him as he was such a character! Lottie is still hanging in there, although she’s sleeping 20 out of 24 hours a day.
Last, but not least is another little one that’s gone to the Rainbow Bridge. Skinny Marie touched our hearts so deeply with her little face and her tragic story. She was found in Indianapolis, Indiana by a vet tech who put her with another vet tech that was also a Whippet breeder. Skinny weighed a whopping 14lbs when she was found — most female Whippets are at least 18 lbs even as small as Skinny was. When Skinny came to live with us, she took over. It was her mission in life to keep everyone here straight and in order. She let us know when it was time to get up (no sleeping in on the weekends either!), when it was time to eat and when it was time to go to bed. She had an iron paw and it was Skinny’s way or the highway
She was buddies with everyone though. I have photos of her lying on the couch or in a dog bed with every dog that lived here (or visited!) during the 5 years we were graced with her presence. Here she is with Taco Belle, a Chihuahua (and another spoiled pet!).
I made a video tribute to her. Ken watches it almost every night as he truly misses her. That’s the sad part about doing rescue. She bonded to Bridget who was the first Whippet we bred that completed her championship and 3 days after Bridget went to the Bridge at the age of 15-1/2, Skinny left us too. They are buried facing each other and share a headstone in our cemetery.
Well, now you’ve had a glimpse of the hounds of Kemar — sometime I’ll do one on the birds.

very handsome dogs.
I will admit I like the hairless variety of Chinese Crested better than the powder puff… but then again, I have smooth collies so I guess I like the lack of hair.
I’ve always like whippets, too.

Are you using SezWho now…? I’ve just about gotten away from ID and am looking into this.

Nessa — thank you! I’ll admit to being VERY prejudiced about them! They’re all champions whether they have it from AKC or not.
Cynthia — thanks! I really prefer the hairless as well — I am NOT a groomer as I’ve proven to myself time and time again. Although there is a bit of work involved with getting a hairless ready for the show ring (they still have some body hair that the judges prefer to be off and some have more than others), it’s much easier to take hair off than it is to try to keep it on and in good shape.
Yes, I am giving sezwho a try. Although I liked Disqus, I was totally uncomfortable with all my comments being elsewhere than with the rest of my data. It’s the DBA in me I’m sure. And they still have no way of importing the comments into your WP database which is a total bummer.
Little Entrepreneur — they are angels while sleeping
And, dogs seem to do a LOT of sleeping even when they aren’t old!

They’re beautiful. Photos like this give a new meaning to the term ‘gone to the dogs’.

I have been known to try to groom a rough collie myself… and though I can trim, strip and wash.. the professionals do a better job than me!
I signed up for SezWho as well. I’m like you.. I’m a programmer, and there’s just something wrong about not owning my own comments.
I’m really liking SezWho so far!

Thanks, Sailor — they are the light of my life along with the birds. I can’t imagine ever not having a pet in my life.
Cynthia — you would think there wouldn’t be much to grooming a rough collie! Bath, brush and a little chalk — pretty much like grooming a Whippet would be all. Sounds like there is more behind the scenes than I would imagine!
SezWho — well, it’s interesting at any rate — it’s not intrusive and the rating thing is kind of cute.

I enjoyed this post so much! I adore dogs. I have six of them myself. They are such loyal and loving friends. Most of the time dogs make better friends than people!
Your dogs are all beautiful. Thanks so much for sharing them with us.

Thank you, Leigh — each one is special in his or her own way. It’s a shame they pass away so soon. I miss my babies!

I am not a dog person really. I have had 4 dogs in my lifetime. These dogs look great.

My former Fiance has a Papillion, and he also has a chinese Crested Papillion, look like the one shown but he has the “Butterfly ears. I love those dogs….until them I was only a cat person….I own 3…but those 2 dogs I miss terribly.

Laura — Papillons are very cool dogs. Very smart and cute — I see a lot of them in Obedience and Agility where they excel. Payne’s ears are bare because they tend to flop if I let the hair grow too long on them. Otherwise she would look something like a Papillon.
KushMoney — thank you very much! You can tell I am very much a dog person
