Camilla Loses a Toe

Posted by ê¿ê under Friends and Family

Camilla I adopted Camilla in January — she’s an Orange Wing Amazon parrot who is about 15 years old. She’s the lovingest parrot I have.

She loves to sit on my shoulder and play with my hair. She loves me to rub her neck and scratch her head. She doesn’t talk although Amazons are pretty smart birds and many of them do. She does have her noisy moments — usually around 9:00 am and then again around 9:00 pm — she honks and wheedles at a surprising volume for such a little girl, but she’s in good company as the Cockatoo is doing his daily screaming, too — it’s VERY noisy around here when they’re flock calling! It doesn’t last long though and they can be distracted from it by doing some training at that time.

There are 27 varieties of Amazon parrots which, as their name indicates come originally from the Amazon jungles of South America. They are often used in bird shows because of their intelligence and athleticism.

Camilla has always had foot problems. She had one toe on her right foot that was obviously swollen when I got her and her caretaker from the sanctuary said she had gout in that toe. I treated her with cherry juice for the gout — it’s just a shame there isn’t something like Orovo detox for birds and animals as that might have taken care of the entire issue — but her toe remained swollen. Then it developed a lump on it and that prompted me to take her to my vet for a check up. There’s no gout present in the toe; no uric acid crystals there whatsoever. She was treated for an infection, but I was warned that infections in bird feet are hard to treat and that she might need the toe amputated.

Well, poor Camilla’s toe got better while on antibiotics, but has come back this past week and she’s in obvious pain from it, so is going in today for it to be removed. She’ll have 3 toes left and so far, they are in good shape.

I’ve made sure she has perches of varying diameters to help her keep the rest of her feet healthier and she still gets cherries and other fresh fruits in her diet.

Ya’ll say a prayer for Ms. Camilla today that she come through her surgery pain free and a happier bird.

  1. Marie Said,

Here’s hoping Camilla recovers from her surgery and that her other 3 toes will remain infection and inflammation free, so that she doesn’t have to go through this painful time again.

  2. Kim Said,

She is such a pretty bird. I hope all goes well.

  3. glam Said,

Aw, poor Camilla! Give her a kiss for me, lol.

I love birds…..except for the bluejays in my yard. As beautiful as they are, they seem to be the neighborhood bullies.

  4. james Said,

Hey, thanks for the advice :).

Im new to *real* blogging, so its greatly appriciated.

  9. kRiZ cPEc Said,

So I wish that Camilla be healthy and happy after the sugery.

  10. Ian Said,

She’s beautiful. I hope she recovers from the surgery and it fixes her problems once and for all.

  11. Margaret Said,

Camilla’s surgery went well and she’s home and resting. She has a bandage on her foot that she’s major unhappy about and she’s been restricted from doing any climbing. She’s really unhappy about that, too! Because she has to have meds daily, she’s making the trek to West Virginia with us for the show. My friends have offered to let her stay in their motor home while we show — I wasn’t going to leave her in the hotel room, that’s for sure!

She’s such a good girl — made the 8 hour trip with no complaints and has eaten her dinner and is watching the Busch race with her daddy :P — Talk about a little princess!

Thank you everyone for your good wishes and prayers! They have meant so much to me and Camilla!

    Hey Camilla,
Feel better soon. I’m sure you’ll be fine. Let your person know that I just posted about the new Entrecard contest of which your person is a sponsor. Be sure to check it out.

  13. glam Said,

Hey Margaret, I’m glad to hear that Camilla is doing well! Give her a kiss, lol! :)

  14. Christine Said,

So glad Camilla is doing well after her sergury! We have an African Grey, so I know what it’s like to worry about your baby. Hope she heals fast and better than ever!

  15. Margaret Said,

Update on Camilla — she went back to the vet yesterday for a bandage change and check and the site looks really good. There is hardly any swelling and it’s not draining or bleeding, so she will more than likely get the awful bandage and stitches out on Thursday when we go back.

Glam — believe it or not, she gets lots of kisses (and even gives a few in return).

Christine — Camilla has a buddy who is an African Grey. His name is Riley and he’s a real character. Thanks for the well wishes! They’ve worked!
