Cameras and Photography

Reverse Painted Window - Farm SceneI enjoy taking photographs. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m far from being a professional, but like most things I try that I enjoy doing, I also take the time to learn techniques to make my efforts pay off at least for me.

Having good equipment is right up there in importance when it comes to taking good photographs. I’ve graduated from a simple point-and-shoot Kodak digital camera to a Sony DSC-H2 which is a step below a digital SLR which will be my next upgrade.

Digital cameras have come down in price while going up in features. They are now pretty versatile allowing the user to exercise some control over settings while still offering automatic settings for those users who are intimidated by all the terminology about taking photographs. They also have video capability included — a feature I’ve made pretty extensive use of with this Sony.

In my search for a good camera, I made the mistake of buying one without image stabilization. That proved to be a really big mistake since I also didn’t have a tripod at the time, so was taking most of my pictures “on the fly”. They often came out blurry because I moved at the time the shutter was firing. Although it was a great camera in other areas, not having that one feature proved to be it’s downfall as it’s no longer offered by the company and I have not been successful in selling it either. I still use it from time to time — it takes wonderful portraits, but I use the Sony for nearly everything else.

I took this photo at a craft fair my Mom and I went to last weekend (5/11) It caught the colors of this reverse painted window very well and even though I’ve resized the image for the web, it’s still pretty clear and detailed. Hand embroidered baby quilts And just look at the detail of these hand embroidered baby quilts. Luscious colors show up in great detail and you can make out some of the stitching even reduced as the photos are.

My subjects of choice are usually animals and flowers and capturing a moving target is not as easy as you might think! There is a lag between when you click the button and when the shutter fires although you can adjust that to some degree with different settings (ISO and lighting primarily). Getting a flying hummingbird or a running whippet in mid stride is an accomplishment. Having a burst feature on your camera helps with this goal.

Tulip Tree blossomFlowers present their own challenge. To get good close up detail, having a macro feature is almost a necessity. This photo for example is of a Tulip Tree blossom. The blossom was nearly 30 feet up in the tree, so no way to get close to it without a ladder of some kind, but with the 12x zoom and the macro setting, I was able to catch this sun drenched beauty.

I hope my passion for photography shows in my photos. To see other photos I’ve taken, please visit the Travelin’ Show .
