Any Network Guys Out Here?
Posted By ê¿ê on March 26th, 2008
I will confess that I have very little knowledge of networks beyond the very bare basics. The guy we have at work who does our network stuff. When he’s out, I’m expected to cover his duties and there are days when that’s nearly impossible as I just don’t know enough.
For example, Monday he was out on vacation when our phone system decided to get cranky. We use a digital system through the internet, so there are cables EVERYWHERE in the server room. Some of them I know what they are as they look like network cables, but the kicker is, they’re not. They’re CAT6 cables which are specifically designed for voice/data transmission. Well I didn’t know this and someone had used a regular network cable in place of a CAT6 cable and that was what was bollixing up the system.
Thank goodness the culprit confessed to using a "spare" cable that was lying around as he thought his cable was bad (it may have been, I don’t know how to test one to see if it’s good or not), but a quick phone call to Carlos had me on the right track to finding the correct replacement for the incorrect cable.
I hated bothering him on his day off, but there was nothing else I could do. Thanks, Carlos!
