What is it about FarmTown that makes it so popular among the many FaceBook and MySpace users? My friends and I have had some discussions on this very topic.

First of all, it’s really simple to play. There are no complicated rules and no nearly impossible tasks to accomplish in order to advance in the game.

That should make it boring, right?

No, it isn’t boring at all!

Since you’re given essentially a blank palette to paint on, you can arrange your farm in any manner you wish. The accessories you can purchase in the shop ensures that your farm will not look like any other farm in FarmTown.

I see people who have written their names in flowers, plots of crops, trees and paths. I wrote one of my dog’s names using the river pieces. And you don’t have to be an expert at cad drawing to be creative with your farm! If you get tired of the way you have it arranged, you can always move things around or sell, give away or delete them from your game board.

But beyond your farm itself, the game encourages positive experiences among a diverse group of people.

You are encouraged (and required) to have neighbors.

You give gifts to your neighbors and friends on a daily basis.

You hire people to work for you and in turn offer yourself to be hired.

There are multiple places in the game to socialize with others from the Inn to the MarketPlace to the Real Estate office. Yes many people are there looking for work, but I still see them interacting with each other, introducing themselves and chatting about the weather in their respective countries and asking questions of each other.

I’ve learned more about how people in other countries live through FarmTown than I have ever done from a school book.

Of course you also meet people from other parts of your own country and that’s just as interesting.

FarmTown is achieving what diplomats have worked for all their lives — an understanding of and respect for other cultures in the world.

So why don’t you give in and become a FarmTown player? You’ll enjoy it!
