I know better.
I know like any good DBA knows that you DON’T UPGRADE WITHOUT MAKING BACKUPS.
I’m sure that if you’re a wordpress user you’ve been notified by your blog that there’s a new .3 version of wordpress out. Well, I have 4 wordpress blogs right now and try to keep them all up to date with the latest versions of wordpress, plug-ins and themes. I want my sites to load fast, be easy to maintain and be user friendly to ALL users.
4:00 am is probably a pretty good time to upgrade stuff like your blog software. There aren’t many idiots people up at that time of the morning surfing the internet after all. Since most of my traffic comes from the home of the brave, I figured that would be a good time to do these upgrades. I’m up anyway being an idiot early bird, so it seemed opportune.
What I didn’t take into account was my lacking-in-progesterone brain which forgets my name at the drop of a hat these days. I have two blogs that the automatic update doesn’t work on because no matter what permissions I give, it doesn’t seem to have the right ones. So those two blogs I have to FTP the files up to. I KNOW not to overwright the wp_content folder. I KNOW BETTER! And while I did take a back up of the databases, I didn’t take a backup of the site, so when I overwrote the wp_content folder, I wiped out all the photographs I had for my photo blog. Only 80 posts on that one….ONLY EIGHTY F’ING POSTS EACH WITH ANYWHERE FROM ONE TO TWELVE PHOTOS IN IT. ![]()
For those of you who are not wordpress users, the wp_content folder holds your themes, plugins and uploads. I haven’t peeked into the zip file to see, but when I coped it over my existing folder, my themes and plugins didn’t get wiped out so I guess I have that to be thankful for. But my uploads did get wiped, so now I have to go back through all 80 posts, find the photograhs I used and re-upload them all. At least Windows Live kept a cached copy of the posts, so I can at least make sure I’m re-uploading the right photograph.
I’m halfway through the 80 posts. I don’t know how much more I’ll do today as that’s more than 3 pages back and not many people go back that far when they hit the Travelin’ Show, but just in case you’re one that is just so enthralled by my fantastic photography that you HAVE to scroll back through them all, I’ll get the other 40 missing photos up by the weekend.
Thanks for your understanding and a double thanks for any of you who arent’t snickering as you read this.

Shame, I feel for you. I would have just started screaming if this had happened to me. I hope you get everything back up and running quickly and easily.
Oh no. That sounds bad. And really tedious. I’m sorry. We’ll celebrate when you get it all done.
OMG! Truly sorry to hear it. Hope you can get stuff worked out without to much trouble!
But this is so fitting to read after I gave you the Brainy Award today.
Okay, do hope the fix goes well. xx
No snickering here (although I am going to have to read about Hot sex on tap and it better not be sordid – lol)
The way I see computers is a double edged sword at Best. At their worst, they can be down right vicious, extremely stupid, and down right uncaring. It seems to me those that designed that lovely piece of software should have put some redundancy, just a little into the program, that would have stopped it before it wipes your slate clean, tells you what your about to do, and at least asks you IF you want to continue.
That is truly a shame.
Now to that next post.
Beamer
Oh fer cryin’ out loud…. I almost went through and did the upgrade, BUT decided against it at the last momento. I’ll wait abit!
Eww, that sucks!
It annoys me greatly that WP has it so you can update plugins automatically, but their own crap’ola you have to do manually.
Oooo LOL that is not good! But I have to laugh… mainly because I’m restoring from a crash! And what is the deal with some of the blogs not wanting to do the automatic upgrade with the plugin, no matter if we make the whole subdir 777 anyway? Actually all mine work with that, but some of the plugin upgrades Will Not Work no matter what I set the permissions too. Pisses me off. I want easy dangit!
We need to lift our glasses and drink to spending time restoring!
@Lyndi — thanks! I can use all the sympathy I can wring from any and every one.
@Carol — it will be a BYOB party but we WILL party!
@Chilly — I’m afraid I don’t qualify for your award now
@Beamer — hope you didn’t find it too sordid. I do try to keep this site fairly clean as my 85 year old mother reads it as do both my sisters and my son
@Monica — if your version of automatic upgrade plug-in works, it’s easy as pie to do. The other two blogs that the plug-in works on were easy as pie to upgrade.
@Monique — you need to install the automatic upgrade plug-in. It truly makes upgrading WordPress pretty painless. If I could only get it to work on ALL 4 blogs!
@Cynthia — yeah – I probably need to ask the plug-in writers what to do. Both of the blogs in question are add-on domains on that server, so I may need to get my ISP involved to get it all straightened out. Here’s to drinking!
I’m not snickering at all – I’m going, “Oh no, oh no …”
Not a fun situation!
@Lux — thanks sweetie. You keep your mama straight!
