I know people will query Google on the oddest things — I mean I routinely put in what probably looks like some pretty bizarre search terms. Things like “TSQL datetime formats”  or “replication error x1zbl001239847″.

Well, those won’t look weird to a SQL database administrator, but to the average Joe, they do.

When I look through my statistics, the one search term that’s bringing people here from Google is “Kidnapping”. I did write a post titled “My Kidnapping Experience“, so that’s the one that’s getting all the hits.

I have to admit that I’m disappointed in that.

I want my traffic to come from articles I’ve written on “best SEO practices” or “tips to drive traffic to your website or blog“, not the nightmare that came about from Bluehost not allowing my domain name to be renewed until they could rip me off for $70 for it.

No, that’s one experience I definitely want to put behind me!

So what about you? Are you happy with where your traffic is coming from? Do your search terms reflect the true subject of your blog, or like mine, does it come from some unexpected and odd source?

I once had a reader tell me his traffic was coming from the search term “Pinay scandal” and told me that if I used that in a post, my readership would go viral. Well, I tried it and it didn’t — ha! ha! Who would have thought??

If you don’t have a particular subject today that you want to write about, you can find some with the help of Google Search Terms. I see among today’s terms are “raccoon roundworm” (while I’m pretty sure roundworms in raccoons are the same ones as are found in dogs and cats, I’m no veterinarian, so can’t swear to it. 8-O ), celiac disease symptoms (just what the heck IS celiac disease?? :?: ) and “duwop revolution spf15 bronzing body moisturizer”  (do you think they meant REVLON? 8-) )

Also among today’s popular search terms are “David Hasselhoff”  — not the celebrity I would have thought would be searched on today in particular. More in tune with what I’m peripherally aware might be in line with today’s topics is “Star Wars” — well there ARE some new movies coming out that might spark interest in that term. I didn’t see any for something relatively normal like piano lessons although I would imagine there are plenty of people out there looking for those.

Do you make use of sites like the Google one I gave you? If so, do you go deeper into the site to find other terms? When I did, I see more “normal” things – things I would expect to see like “mothers day poems”, or “dallas cowboys collapse“  and ” jon kate plus 8 star caught stepping out“. Do you use any other keyword sites?

While I haven’t previously made use of it, I may well do so in the future. It can’t hurt, can it?

  1. Every once in a while I write about something that generates hits for months! Right now, I get several hits every week for people looking for “how to wear a pashmina.” They must be real disappointed when they see it’s a cat modeling a pashmina!

That’s too funny, Daisy! I wondered if you got many hits from your Rastafarian wig — that’s my favorite photo of you. It’s the one I thought should win the Hallmark contest. My Whippet, Tara was in that contest, too. She didn’t win, though. I’m happy you won — you are by far my favorite cat!

My top page score is for a post about billboards but apparently they are searching the tag, neighborhood. I have no idea if they are actually reading the post or just landing and moving on.
I’m off to check our your post on SEO. I still don’t get it.
