12 Microsoft SharePoint Sites - Winners of the...

Sometimes you just have to be smacked in the head to realize something.

What is it they call that, a defining moment? I call it the “DUH event”.

My network guy finally got a server going for me with Sharepoint on it. This is something I’ve waited on for months. While it’s a far cry from the Raid 10, 64 bit, 300GB box I wanted, it’s going to have to suffice for now.

The company sent me to two classes on Sharepoint last year with the ultimate goal of my getting something going for a potential customer of ours, but the customer has gone off the radar and now we just want the Sharepoint to better serve our outlying offices and remote technicians.

Anyway, I struggled and struggled with the darned thing half the day Tuesday and never could get it to save anything – no users, not web parts nothing.

So I looked and he had only installed Sharepoint 2.0. I had him install 3.0 which helped a lot.

Now I could install users and set their security levels, but still no luck with it allowing me to create web parts. I spent a good part of yesterday tinkering with it — I just wanted to get the landing page up and then would begin my interview process to get data for the sections I can envision the company using, but couldn’t even get that far! Now I’m getting angry. It’s horribly frustrating to me when I feel like my time is being wasted.

I stopped working on it at that point. When I get that mad  , then nothing good is going to come of it, so I need to step back and reevaluate the situation.  I did calming exercises — deep breathing and tried to think about something else. Still too emotional, so put it completely away and did something routine and for the most part, mindless. That helped. By then it was time to go home, so I stopped at the gym and walked for a mile on the treadmill. I’m still trying to build back up to prior levels after the 8 week hiatus due to Max breaking his leg. They physical release helped a lot.

Then about 2 am, it hit me. I’ll bet he didn’t know to install .Net 3.0! And I’ll also bet he didn’t set up IIS correctly.

When I got in this morning, I took a peek and sure enough those things weren’t configured properly. Since I don’t have the Windows 2003 server disc, I’ll have to wait for him to get in this morning to take care of that for me, but now I feel like I can get on with the planning of the sites.

Sigh…..I’m glad that’s over with!
