When you’re self employed, running a business these days takes a lot of work! Even my tiny little dog breeding business has me hopping. Not only do I have the animals to take care of, but I must keep up with licensing, taxes, expenses (beyond vet bills and dog food, let me assure you!) and other sundry details.
I make use of a lot of tools that comes with Microsoft Office — Excel spreadsheets and Access databases, but some of those tools are so far advanced for the average user that they would have to take a course on them in order to make the best use of them in a small business situation. I’m fortunate that my “regular” job entails my using those in the normal course of my day.
Heck, just keeping track of what this blog does in the way of readership and views seems like it should take business performance management software! And that’s just to satisfy my own curiosity about where my readers are coming from and what their favorite browser is, etc. I surely don’t make enough off the Project Wonderful ads to keep track of! (Let’s see, at last look, it was 12¢
Anyway, to get back on my original topic, being a small business owner has many tasks associated with it that require tools to manage it effectively. I would love to hear from some of you about what tools you use to keep track of your expenditures with an eye towards those tools that save you the most time.
I wrote earlier this week about using your email software to help you manage your time and tasks, but what other tools (not necessarily computer software) do you recommend? I’m all for finding time savers!
I’ll compile all your suggestions in a later post and of course, there will be link-love to go around for the best suggestions! (and maybe a little surprise as well !)

Like you, I own my own business and I’m pretty bad with keeping track of expenses so tax time is really stressful for me. Last year I incorporated my business so the tax gets more complicated. Yikes.
