Anniversary of Blogging - Is it Just Social Media or a New Way to Diet?

Posted By ê¿ê on December 28th, 2007

This week marks the 10 year anniversary of blogging and NPR has been hosting a week-long report of the evolution of blogging.

For those of us who have been blogging for a long time, it’s so far been a bit on the ho-hum side, but I’m hoping the report has generated some interest in blogging in those who have never blogged or read a blog before.

Today’s discussion has centered around mobile blogging technologies such as UTTERZ and Twitter. Some samples of UTTERZ recordings were played in response to a poll posted on Andy Carvin’s blog asking people to tell him what plans they have for New Year’s Eve. Unfortunately, there was nothing original or particularly insightful in either of the examples played. And Andy and Steve Inskeep did discuss the fact that people are using these two medias as extensions of conversations and not as ways to promote new, insightful or creative ideas.

Attention was also paid to the increasing amount of time that people spend blogging these days. I’m sure it will be coming that some research company will research just how much time is spent on the job reading or writing blog entries.

I confess to doing both on breaks and at lunch, but it’s resulted in my losing 10 pounds because, instead of hanging around the kitchen drinking coffee and eating whatever someone brought in that day to share, I’m sitting at my desk reading blogs or writing in my own. That can’t be a totally bad thing, can it?? :P

On with blogging! The new way to diet!

Photo of the Moon Christmas Eve

Posted By ê¿ê on December 27th, 2007

I took a really cool photo of the moon on Christmas Eve. This photo was taken with my Sony DSC 6MP 12X optical zoom 2x digital zoom set at the highest resolution and zoom.

Full moon on Christmas Eve I want to start including some of my photography on this blog. Although I am quite the amateur, I think I catch a few fairly good photographs from time to time. They will all be nature photos — I do know that I suck at taking photos of people.

I think you have to enjoy your subject matter in order to take good photos of it and I’m not a very people person. I have the requisite ones of family, but don’t just photograph people for the heck of it.

I would love to get a discussion going of what drives you to photograph a particular subject, so do please comment!

SQL Server 2005 Administrator’s Companion

Posted By ê¿ê on December 26th, 2007

Some time ago, I signed up to review this book written by Edward Whalen, Marcilina Garcia, Burzin Patel, Stacia Misner and Victor Isakov for PASS (Professional Association for SQL Server), but had forgotten about it.

When I arrived at work this morning, I found a rather large box from Canada on my desk with said book inside.

No, I haven’t read it yet (I read fast, but not THAT fast!), but I’ve peeked inside already and can say with certainty that this will be a book that I will use to help me understand more completely Microsoft’s newest rendition of SQL Server.

Oops! SQL2005 isn’t the NEWEST rendition of SQL Server, but it’s the newest thats in widespread use. SQL2008 is in BETA testing now. I have not succumed to the temptation to download and play with that new version. Time being my major constraint at this point.

At any rate, I’m excited to have been chosen to review the book, SQL Server 2005 Administrator’s Companion and can’t wait to get more in depth with it. Watch this site for more information about this book in upcoming posts.
